Fujitsu launches Takane AI model in partnership with Cohere

Fujitsu
Fujitsu’s purpose is to make the world more sustainable by building trust in society through innovation. As the digital transformation partner of choice for customers in over 100 countries, our 124,000 employees work to resolve some of the greatest challenges facing humanity.
Overview
Fujitsu, a global leader in digital transformation, partnered with Cohere to develop its Japanese large language model (LLM), Takane. Takane represents Fujitsu’s commitment to advancing artificial intelligence and delivering world-class solutions tailored to its customers’ needs.
By leveraging Cohere’s cutting-edge technology, Fujitsu sits at the forefront of AI-driven innovation. Takane empowers Japanese companies in industries that demand the highest level of security to harness the power of generative AI.
Yoshinami Takahashi, Corporate Vice President, COO, Fujitsu Limited, comments: “We are dedicated to supporting customer’s business transformation by bringing the most advanced AI to market, not only through our own innovations, but also by collaborating with our global partners like Cohere.”
Challenge
As businesses increasingly adopt AI to enhance decision-making and operational efficiency, Fujitsu sought to build a highly accurate Japanese large language model capable of addressing industry-specific challenges for customers handling confidential data and for tasks requiring compliance with laws, regulations, and industry rules.
Private and secure AI is mission-critical for industries Fujitsu serves like finance, healthcare, and government. These sectors operate under immense pressure, manage massive data volumes, navigate complex workflows, and adhere to strict regulations—all while operating in high-stakes environments. To meet these challenges, they need AI solutions built for secure, customized deployment.
However, developing a robust, scalable model required access to advanced infrastructure, extensive language datasets, and specialized expertise in AI development.
Furthermore, characteristics of the Japanese language also pose significant hurdles for general-purpose LLMs, limiting their accuracy and reliability in business contexts. A highly accurate Japanese LLM is especially important for sectors including government, finance, healthcare, and law, where even minor language errors can have serious consequences.
To accelerate this effort while maintaining high standards for quality and security, Fujitsu turned to Cohere as a strategic partner.
Solution
Built on the Cohere Command series, and privately deployed, we supported Fujitsu with the training and technical expertise to create a custom-built model: Takane, a state-of-the-art Japanese LLM tailored to Fujitsu’s unique needs and customer base. The model is trained for the Japanese language and attains a world-class score on the JGLUE benchmark.
With Cohere’s advanced large language model (LLM), Fujitsu built Takane to understand and process complex technical language across specialized industries that require a high degree of accuracy and reliability.
The collaboration ensured Takane was not only accurate and scalable but also secure and aligned with Fujitsu’s ethical AI principles.
Key capabilities of Takane include:
- Processes workflows for complex industries like legal, finance, and manufacturing. Takane processes extended text inputs with precision, streamlining complex, document-heavy workflows to reduce manual effort and boost accuracy.
- Delivers Japanese-centric multilingual business enablement. Takane excels in Japanese while maintaining robust support for other languages such as German, Chinese, and Portuguese. This capability helps enterprises streamline global operations, ensuring accurate communication and seamless language transitions.
- Streamlines data organization for business efficiency. Takane transforms unstructured information into ready-to-use formats like JSON, HTML, Markdown, and CSV. It also extracts key details, such as entity linking, enabling businesses to organize data seamlessly and power downstream workflows for greater operational efficiency.
- Solves complex math and reasoning challenges. Takane handles complex math and reasoning with precision, providing accurate solutions that help finance and engineering industries make better decisions and solve problems efficiently.
- Delivers actionable enterprise insights for enhanced decision making. Takane delivers high-accuracy results in question answering, summarization, and sentiment analysis. Enterprises can quickly distill actionable insights from large datasets, accelerating response times and enhancing strategic decisions.
Outcome
Takane is now a part of Fujitsu’s digital transformation offerings, driving innovation across highly-regulated industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, and financial services. Takane is also being integrated into Fujitsu’s AI service Fujitsu Kozuchi and offered through the all-in-one operation platform Fujitsu Data Intelligence PaaS (DI PaaS).
With Cohere’s advanced expertise in developing custom-built models, Fujitsu accelerated development and focused on creating high-impact AI applications. Fujitsu is able to empower businesses to harness Japanese natural language processing, driving efficiency, smarter decisions, and better customer experiences.
The success of Takane underscores the value of the Fujitsu and Cohere partnership, demonstrating how collaboration can unlock new possibilities in AI, impact the current state of corporate workflows, and shape the future of business.
