Today, Cohere is announcing agreements with the governments of Canada and the UK to collaborate on implementing secure AI solutions and cutting-edge research to strengthen the public sector and national security. AI can significantly boost productivity and efficiency, enhancing government services and national sovereignty. Robust security measures are essential for accelerating public sector adoption of AI, ensuring highly sensitive data remains protected.

Cohere’s CEO and co-founder, Aidan Gomez, participated in a trilateral discussion with Prime Minister Mark Carney and Prime Minister Keir Starmer to emphasize the strategic importance of AI in advancing national sovereignty and economic growth. Cohere is proud to be a key partner to both Canada and the UK as the countries work together to drive world-leading AI innovation.

This marks another major step expanding our global presence and transforming operations for regulated industries and governments around the world.

Strengthening the UK's AI capabilities

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) focuses on leveraging AI in government and across sectors like finance, healthcare, and defence to boost economic growth and national security. We will work together to explore opportunities to implement secure AI solutions in areas of strategic importance to the UK.

The UK has been a great place to expand our operations and attract top-tier AI talent. As part of this agreement, we are building on our presence with plans to increase headcount to over 100 UK-based staff.

Core areas of the announcement:

AI security: collaborate with UK’s AI Security Institute (AISI) to elevate standards and best practices in AI security.
Talent ecosystem: ensuring the UK builds and retains AI expertise to further innovation. Cohere will support fellowship programs and provide access to state-of-the-art models to advance AI research progress.
Defense: explore opportunities to support responsible and secure adoption of AI in defence contexts.
